Laptop Care and Routines
- The students are responsible for caring for the school laptops at home and at school. A carry-case has been provided by the school for the device to travel between school and home. A protective cover for the device can also be purchased separately.
- Set aside places where the laptop is able to be safely used, stored and charged at home.
- Students need to bring their laptop to school fully charged each day. It is a good idea to tie the "charging routine" into another routine such as teeth brushing which can be a "trigger" to remind students to charge and pack their laptops.
- Parents are asked to supervise the use of the laptops. It is recommended that students do not use the device in a 'private area' such as a bedroom.
- General questions about homework can be asked via the homework blog. Questions of a more personal nature should be emailed directly to the teacher.
Digital Citizenship
Our children are living in a digital age where participation in a global community and continual access to information and communication has become part of our everyday expectations.
Students need to learn how to behave appropriately and safely in this environment, just as they need to learn safety and manners in all other situations.
We consider our students to be on their "L"-plates with technology. They need opportunities to learn, discover and explore, but they also need guidelines and supervision for these activities. Teaching our children to be safe and responsible digital citizens is a joint responsibility of the school and parents.
It is important for you to "learn alongside" your child so they can navigate this unchartered world and negotiate hazards successfully. There will be times when your child makes mistakes. These mistakes are an important learning opportunity for them and the adults in their lives.
Log-ins, Copyright and Licensing
- The laptops have been purchased for school use and are primarily for learning. From time to time, students may be allowed to use the devices for "play" but any activity should be lawful.
- All of our students are under the age of 13 years so they are not legally allowed to have individual log-ins for many services such as hotmail, facebook, youtube etc.
- Students do have limited access to some services via a log-in that has been set up by BCE and is used under-supervision by teachers for learning purposes.
- Students should not install any software unless under direct supervision of an adult and with express permission or direction of the school. Please do not install extra software onto school devices.
- If you or your child has inadvertently installed software or set up accounts that should not be on the school laptops, they should be removed.
Setting Up Your Laptop
The primary purpose of the school 1:1 laptop is for learning. It is your responsibility to make sure that it is ready for use for school work and home work. Programs and features that are distracting to you and others should not be added to the school laptop.
